My Journey

I did not grow up wanting to be a real estate investor. I didn’t come from money and my family and friends are not real estate investors. I wanted to be a counselor and work in my field of social work, which I hold a degree in. I knew that I wanted to help people and find meaning in my career. Life had other plans. My daughter was born in 2001 with a rare heart defect requiring immediate open heart surgery. As she was recovering from sepsis post surgery, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic lung disease. I did not know how I would be able to care for her and work full time as a social worker, my current field. She was on oxygen and required medications every few hours as a baby. I took some time off to care for her as she was very sick. I decided to get my real estate license in order to be able to buy a house for our family and use the commission as a down payment when she was little, because our condo was too small for our family and I wanted a house for my daughter and husband. We could not afford a house at the time without the down payment. When I was in real estate school, I learned that I could work part time in real estate and still support my family. That is why I chose real estate for my career. I learned residential and commercial real estate and began to buy more properties. As Maya grew, she developed lung infections that could not be cured by antibiotics. That is the nature of cystic fibrosis. I was able to find international medicine for her across the world to cure her infections until a treatment was available for cystic fibrosis 19 years later (trikafta). I was able to do this because I could control my time and I had extra cash flow coming in from my real estate investments. When Maya was 7, I had a son, Jack. After Jack was born, I ended up raising the kids as a sole parent and lost everything and had to start over. It was really hard. I began to rebuild. If I didn’t have my real estate investments and time flexible career, I would have gone under. I could not work hard enough to have time and money for my family by myself. My friends and family did not encourage me to invest in real estate. They told me it was too risky. However now, after watching me, they also own investments and can see how my homes provide stability for my children and myself. There is a lot of work to do in the world. It doesn’t have to be so hard. If we have more resources, life is easier. I want to devote the rest of my life to build up families, foundations, and individuals by teaching real estate investing and providing safe rental housing for people to live.
